Will the hangover medicine Wake Up call be safe for me?
I am a person who get’s frequent stomach aches and I am usually taking Pepto or Tum. I went to the doctor for that and she said to just keep on taking the same Medicine when ever I get an upset tummy. I know that the the Wake Up Medicine pill contains Aspirin because it’s made by the people who make Bayer. My friend is having a party and there will be drinks. I wanted to take the Wake Up call pill when I wake up. Do you think it will be safe for me?

Yes and no. First of all, Pepto is probably not the best choice for upset stomach. Bismuth Subsalylate is a combination aspirin derivative that can increase upset stomach. It has it’s greatest worth when taken form diarrhea as Bismuth both has anti-infective, and anti-diarrheal properties.
Wake-up call has no contraindications in particular, but it does contain aspirin. Acetyl salylcylic acid, (aspirin or ASA for short) does in itself, cause upset stomach. ASA works by inhibiting the COX-1 enzyme. This can decrease swelling and pain. COX-1 is also important in maintaining blood-flow to the stomach’s “protective” mucous producing cells. Thus, everytime you take ASA, you decrease their capacity for protecting the stomach, upsetting your stomach, and increase the chance of forming an ulcer.
Unfortunately, there is no great way to prevent a hangover. ASA is chosen because, unlike acetaminophen (tylenol), it doesn’t cause additional liver harm. Wake-up can be quite expensive though. Your best bet would be to number one: stay hydrated, and number two: use it with food or milk. This will decrease the amount of ASA able to come in contact with your stomach tissue, decreasing upset stomach.
Wake up works in two ways; it has a high dose of ASA to help with pains and it has caffeine to wake you up and help with head aches. Caffeine is a diuretic, so you do need to drink plenty of fluids if you take this medication, but you should be drinking a lot of fluids anyway to try to prevent a hangover.
